Possible in situ Tests of the Evolution of Elemental and Isotopic Abundances in the Solar Convection Zone

چکیده

Helioseismology has shown that the chemical composition of the Sun has changed over its lifetime. The surface abundance of helium and heavy elements is believed to have decreased by up to 10% relative to their initial values. However, this reduction is too small to be tested by direct observations of the photospheric chemical composition. Here, we compare the predicted variations in the solar photospheric composition with precise measurements of abundances in meteorites and the solar wind composition. Although elemental composition ratios can vary by roughly a percent (e. g. for Ca/Mg and Ca/Fe) over the Sun’s lifetime, their measurements are rife with uncertainties related to uncertainties in the interpretation of meteoritic measurements, photospheric determinations, and the complex fractionation processes occurring between the upper photosphere and lower chromosphere and the corona. On the other hand, isotopic ratios can be measured much more accurately and are not expected to be affected as much by extrasolar processes, although more work is required to quantify their effect. As the isotopic ratios evolve in the Sun proportionally to the mass ratios of the isotopes, light elements yield the highest variations in isotopic ratios. They are predicted to reach as high as 0.6% for O/O and are only slightly lower in the cases of Mg/Mg and Si/Si. Such a value should be well within the sensitivity of new missions such as Genesis.

Fractionation Processes in the Solar Wind Revealed by Noble Gases Collected by Genesis Regime Targets

Introduction: Genesis collected solar wind (SW) ions with one major objective being to obtain abundances and isotopic composition of ultra-volatile elements. The SW is a proxy for the composition of the solar outer convective zone (OCZ) and, hence for the solar nebula. For most elements accurate values for the isotopic composition of sun can be inferred from meteorites. Carbonaceous chondrites ...

The Coronal Isotopic Composition as Determined Using Solar Energetic Particles

Solar energetic particles (SEPs), like the solar wind, provide a direct sample of the Sun. Although SEP abundances show a variable amount of mass fractionation, it is possible to develop methods of correcting for it in order to deduce the composition of the corona. Using high-resolution measurements from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer on the Advanced Composition Explorer, we have studied the is...

Shallow extra mixing in solar twins inferred from Be abundances ⋆

Context. Lithium and beryllium are destroyed at different temperatures in stellar interiors. As such, their relative abundances offer excellent probes of the nature and extent of mixing processes within and below the convection zone. Aims. We determine Be abundances for a sample of eight solar twins for which Li abundances have previously been determined. The analyzed solar twins span a very wi...

Numerical Study of Electro-thermo-convection in a Differentially Heated Cavity Filled with a Dielectric Liquid Subjected to Partial Unipolar Injection

The Coulomb force applied by an electric field on any charge present in a dielectric liquid may cause fluid motion. At high applied electric fields in an insulating liquid, electric charge carriers are created at metallic/liquid interfaces, a process referred to as ion injection, and result from electrochemical reactions. In this article we deals with the problem of electro thermal convection i...

The Theoretical Calculation of the Rossby Number and the 'non-local' Convective Overturn Time for Pre-main Sequence and Early Post-main Sequence Stars

This paper provides estimates of convective turnover time scales for Sun-like stars in the pre-main sequence and early post-main sequence phases of evolution, based on up-to-date physical input for the stellar models. In this first study, all models have solar abundances, which is typical of the stars in the Galactic disk where most of the available data have been collected. A new feature of th...
